Apple Icon Image format
The Apple Icon Image format, specific to Apple Inc.'s macOS, is employed for the representation of icons. It accommodates various sizes, ranging from 16 × 16 to 512 × 512 points, at scales of both 1x and 2x. This format supports 1- and 8-bit alpha channels, allowing for diverse transparency options. Furthermore, it allows for multiple image states, such as different appearances for open and closed folders. Despite being fixed in size, these icons are scalable by the operating system, enabling display at any intermediate size for flexibility.
Portable Pixmap
PPM, which stands for Portable Pixmap, is a straightforward image storage format. It supports three types of images: color (PPM), grayscale (PGM), and black and white (PBM). These formats are particularly useful as an intermediary representation during the conversion of raster image files between different platforms. The development of the PPM format is credited to Jeff Poskanzer.
