Graphics Interchange Format

The GIF format, developed by CompuServe in 1987 (GIF87a), is a widely used method for image exchange. It's primarily used for graphics and is capable of storing compressed data without compromising quality, though it supports a maximum of only 256 colors. The format was designed to facilitate the transfer of raster images over networks. The format underwent a significant modification in 1989 (GIF89a), which introduced features such as support for transparency and animation.
